#42 - 3 Signs That An Executor Needs Help

Not everyone directly asks for help, no matter how much they need it.

For example, take someone that just got thrust into an being an estate executor. They might be struggling but are too proud to admit they need help. They may feel like it's solely their responsibility to close out their loved one's estate. Or, they may not want to put that burden on others, knowing how complex and challenging estate administration can be.

But often they give clues that they could use help. The next time you're around friends, neighbors, co-workers, or social or community groups where you know someone lost a relative, pay attention for some of these common signs.

1. Making more personal phone calls during business hours

Many estate administration tasks involve contacting customer support departments. Since estate closure tasks are more personal in nature, it's often easier to try to speak to someone. However, many companies only have phone support during normal business hours. If you notice a co-worker on more non-work phone calls than normal, and they are frequently on hold, they may be struggling to find time to make all of these calls.

2. Skipping out on regular get-togethers

As you age, how you spend your social time evolves. We all expect that once you have kids, your normal, recurring gatherings with friends will be replaced by changing diapers and grabbing sleep when you can. Eventually that will turn into attending your kid's activities, or other social events that fit with your current life stage. A sudden drop in attendance from someone that recently lost a family member could be a sign that they are having trouble juggling the responsibilities of the estate with their normal activities.

3. Uttering key phrases

While someone may not directly ask for help, they may unintentionally slip key these phrases in during a conversation. Keep an ear open for:

  • This is overwhelming

  • I never knew that doing this would take so much time

  • I don't want to deal with this now

  • I'm exhausted

  • I'm tired

If you notice an executor going off topic in a discussion and saying anything similar to these key phrases, it is a strong sign that they are having challenges.
